Free training from Skill Share

Are you a voluntary group or organisation working with children, young people and families in East Sussex? If so you might be interested in a free programme of training for leaders, managers, staff and volunteers of voluntary and community sector groups and organisations.

Skill Share is offering free places on a range of training courses including child protection, challenging behaviour and supervision and appraisal. Courses covering twelve different topics are on offer but, because we endeavour to keep class sizes small, places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Managing the psychological aspects of change

Monday 9 January, 6-9pm, The Dental Practice Board, Eastbourne

This course will help leaders and managers to develop their understanding of how people respond to change, how that may affect their behaviour and how to manage that within their group or organisation.

Supervision and appraisal
Monday 16 January, 6-8.30pm, The Dental Practice Board, Eastbourne

Participants will gain an understanding of supervision and appraisal and why they are important. The course will also cover: linking supervision and appraisal to performance management systems; supervision agreements and agendas; approaches to appraisals; recording supervision and appraisals and the legal issues.

Record keeping and report writing

An introduction to building resilience

This course will provide staff and volunteers with the opportunity to explore what we mean by building resilience, learn about the latest resilience research and identify how this can be applied in our work with children, young people and families.

This course is for staff and volunteers who wish to develop their knowledge of child development. Participants will explore the theories relating to child development, the links between theory and how children and young people achieve their developmental milestones, the factors that influence the development process and key transitions in children and young people's lives.

Participants will gain an understanding of their role in establishing a safe environment and safeguarding children and young people from harm and abuse. The course will look at identifying signs that indicate a child may be at risk and responding to keep the child safe. It will also provide some background information about law and child protection.

This is an HSE approved Emergency First Aid at Work course which includes both theory and practical sessions. Delivered in a relaxed atmosphere to boost participants’ confidence topics covered include: First Aid priorities; Managing incidents; Examination of a casualty; Basic Life support; Control of bleeding; Regulations; First Aid kits; Record keeping and report writing.

This course has been developed to increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of staff and volunteers in talking to parents about difficult and sensitive issues. Participants will have the opportunity to: identify fears and concerns about approaching parents about a difficult or sensitive issue; imagine how the parent might feel receiving the information; share ideas of what helps or doesn't help parents in that situation; discuss key concepts for communicating with parents and practice skills to increase confidence
